The Rolex Milgauss 6543 is the exceedingly rare first-generation anti-magnetic sports watch from Rolex, produced in the mid-1950s for scientists, engineers, and technicians working around strong magnetic fields. Introduced in 1954, it was the inaugural reference in the Milgauss line, featuring a 38mm stainless steel Oyster case with an internal soft iron Faraday cage to shield the movement from magnetic interference up to 1,000 gauss. Unlike later models, the 6543 had a rotating bezel similar to the Submariner, paired with a honeycomb-patterned dial for added anti-magnetic protection and visual texture. It was powered by the automatic Caliber 1080, and early examples often featured the distinctive red “MILGAUSS” script. With extremely limited production—likely only a few dozen pieces—surviving examples are among the most sought-after vintage Rolex tool watches, representing the genesis of one of the brand’s most unique professional lines.
