The Rolex Explorer II 16550, produced from 1985 to 1989, is a transitional reference that marked a major shift in the model’s evolution. Available in both black and white “Polar” dials, it introduced the larger 40mm Oyster case, sapphire crystal, and an independently adjustable 24-hour hand for true dual-time functionality. Early examples are especially prized for their “cream dial” effect on the white versions, caused by a paint defect that turned the originally bright white finish into a warm ivory tone over time. Powered by the Caliber 3085, the 16550 offered improved accuracy and durability while retaining 100-meter water resistance. Though short-lived, this reference bridged the vintage 1655 era and the modern Explorer II, making it highly collectible for its rarity, transitional features, and unique dial aging.
