The Omega Moonwatch Speedmaster Professional is an iconic, NASA-certified watch famously worn by the Apollo 11 astronauts during the moon expedition in 1969.
In 2021, Omega introduced a new iteration of the Moonwatch, featuring an updated caliber (3861) that made the watch more precise and anti-magnetic. This updated Moonwatch also came with two crystal variations: the Sapphire Sandwich and Hesalite versions.
In this blog, we will break down the major differences between these two variations.
Omega Speedmaster Sapphire Sandwich vs Hesalite Crystal
The Omega Hesalite Speedmaster’s crystal is made of an acrylic material, true to the original Moonwatch model from back in 1969. Hesalite was a preferable material for safety purposes, since it tends to crack instead of shatter into sharp pieces.
A major trade-off for Hesalite, though, is that it scratches far easier. However, these scratches can be polished out and are a much cheaper fix. Sapphire, on the other hand, is expensive to fix.
The Omega Sapphire Sandwich Speedmaster has a crystal and case back that are made from sapphire. It gets its nickname from the watch being “sandwiched” between two crystals, which makes it a heavier wear than Hesalite.
Using sapphire crystals gives this watch a bit of an upgrade, since it is clearer, anti-glare and scratch resistant. However, it does have the potential to chip and crack and is more expensive to fix.

Omega Sapphire Sandwich and Hesalite Differences
The crystal choice is the main difference between these watches, but there are other changes for each model.
The Sapphire Sandwich Speedmaster’s clear case back showcases the inner workings of the watch, while the Hesalite version has a stainless steel case back engraved with Omega’s Seahorse medallion and a Nasa inscription.
Other small differences between the Hesalite and Sapphire Sandwich are the bracelet. The Hesalite model has the classic brush finish on the bracelet, giving it a more rugged, matte appearance that has a vintage appeal. The Sapphire Sandwich bracelet features a brushed finish with polished center links, giving it a dressier look.

Omega Hesalite Speedmaster vs Sapphire Sandwich Prices
For many buyers, the choice between these two models may come down to cost.
The Hesalite Speedmaster is more affordable, since acrylic crystal is far less expensive than sapphire, giving it a lower retail and market value than the Sapphire Sandwich variation.
The Hesalite Speedmaster (ref. 310.30.42.50.01.001) retails for $7,800, and has a secondary market value anywhere around $5,500. In comparison, the Sapphire Sandwich Speedmaster (ref. 310.30.42.50.01.002) retails for $9,000 and has a market value around $6,500.
Which Omega Speedmaster is Better?
Deciding between these two models all comes down to personal preference. The Hesalite Speedmaster has a more vintage look, true to the original design, while the Sapphire Sandwich has modern enhancements and clearer crystal.
Regardless of choice, the Omega Speedmaster has a rich history and is an iconic model that watch enthusiasts will continue to love.
