What Is a Midsize Rolex?

A midsize Rolex is any Rolex watch with a case diameter between 31mm and 37mm, bridging the gap between traditional ladies' and full-size men's models.

Rolex Datejust 126234 Blue Oyster Bracelet Watches

The term "midsize" covers several distinct Rolex families that share a common trait: they wear comfortably on a wide range of wrist sizes without feeling too delicate or too imposing. The most popular midsize models include the Rolex Datejust 31, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual in both 31mm and 34mm, the Rolex Date 34, and the Rolex Yacht-Master in its discontinued 35mm and current 37mm configurations. These watches are genuinely unisex, making them appealing to women who want something bolder than a 28mm Lady-Datejust and men who prefer a more classic, understated presence on the wrist.

Rolex has never formally used "midsize" as an official product category, but the term is widely recognized across the collector and dealer community. In the current Rolex catalog, the 31mm Datejust and Oyster Perpetual sit within the brand's lineup alongside the 34mm Oyster Perpetual and the 37mm Yacht-Master. Each of these watches comes with the same Rolex engineering, finishing, and build quality found in the larger 40mm and 41mm sport models, just scaled to a more compact case.

What makes midsize Rolex watches especially interesting in today's market is their versatility. The trend toward smaller, vintage-proportioned watches has pushed demand for 31mm to 36mm pieces, and midsize Rolex watches sit right in the center of that movement. For buyers looking at their first Rolex, a midsize model offers an accessible price point, a refined wrist presence, and a design that works equally well in both casual and formal settings.

Midsize Rolex Review

Everything you need to know before buying a midsize Rolex, summarized for buyers short on time.

The midsize Rolex category is built for buyers who value proportion, versatility, and value, and it has never been more relevant than it is right now. Whether you are a woman looking for something with more wrist presence than a Lady-Datejust or a man drawn to the vintage-inspired elegance of a sub-36mm case, this is where to look.

Rolex has produced midsize watches since the 1950s, when the first 31mm Datejust models appeared alongside the original 36mm. Over the decades, the lineup expanded to include the 34mm Date and Oyster Perpetual, plus the 35mm Yacht-Master in 1994. Today, the current-production midsize models span the Datejust 31 (ref. 278240 and variants), the Oyster Perpetual 31 (ref. 277200), the Oyster Perpetual 34 (ref. 124200), and the Yacht-Master 37.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual 277200 Yellow Watches

Pricing on the secondary market ranges widely. Vintage steel Datejust 31 models start around $4,500, while current-generation steel examples trade between $8,500 and $10,500. Precious metal and diamond-set configurations can exceed $20,000. The Oyster Perpetual 34 offers one of the strongest value propositions in the entire Rolex catalog, with steel models trading between $6,500 and $9,000 depending on dial color.

The biggest decision midsize buyers face is choosing the right case diameter: 31mm for a refined, traditionally feminine or slim-wristed look, 34mm for a true unisex sweet spot, or 37mm for a sportier feel with just enough heft to wear like a small men's watch. That choice drives everything from the models available to the price range you will be shopping in.

As an investment, midsize Rolex watches have shown steady appreciation, particularly discontinued references like the Yacht-Master 35 and vintage two-tone Datejust 31 models. The current market rewards originality, complete sets, and clean examples, so condition matters as much as reference number. Keep scrolling for the full breakdown.

History of Midsize Rolex Watches

Midsize Rolex watches trace their origins to the 1950s, when Rolex first expanded the Datejust beyond the original 36mm case.

The history of midsize Rolex production is closely tied to the evolution of the Datejust family and Rolex's long-running effort to serve a broader audience. While the original 1945 Datejust established 36mm as the gold standard for men's dress watches, Rolex recognized early on that not every wrist, and not every buyer, needed a full 36mm case. What followed was a decades-long expansion of size options that created the midsize category as we know it today.

Rolex Datejust 4467 White 18K Yellow Gold Watches

1945
Rolex introduces the original Datejust (ref. 4467) in 36mm, establishing the foundation for what would eventually branch into multiple case sizes.
1950s
Rolex launches the first 26mm Lady-Datejust for women and introduces the 31mm Datejust shortly after, creating a true "middle size" between the ladies' and men's models.
1950s
The Rolex Date debuts in a 34mm case. Functionally identical to the Datejust with a date window and Cyclops lens, the Date is produced primarily in stainless steel, making it one of the most accessible Rolex models of its era.
1957
The Oyster Perpetual lineup expands with multiple case sizes, including 34mm options that would later be recognized as the core midsize Oyster Perpetual.
1992
Rolex introduces the Yacht-Master, the first entirely new model in nearly 30 years. It debuts in 40mm (men's) and 29mm (ladies') sizes.
1994
The Yacht-Master 35 (ref. 68623, 68628, and later 168622/168623/168628) launches as the first true midsize Rolex sport watch. Available in full gold, two-tone, and Rolesium (steel/platinum).
2007
Rolex updates the midsize Datejust 31 with new reference numbers (178xxx series), incorporating improved movements and modern finishing while maintaining the classic 31mm case.
2015
Rolex discontinues both the Yacht-Master 35 and Yacht-Master 29, replacing them with the new Yacht-Master 37. The 37mm case becomes the smallest sport watch Rolex offers.
2019
The Datejust 31 receives a major overhaul with the 278xxx reference series. These models feature the new Caliber 2236 with a Syloxi silicon hairspring, a redesigned case, and improved water resistance to 100 meters.
2020
Rolex refreshes the Oyster Perpetual collection with new sizes and vibrant dial colors. The OP 31 (ref. 277200) and OP 34 (ref. 124200) replace the previous 177200 and 114200 references.
2025
Rolex introduces new pastel dial options across the Oyster Perpetual collection and debuts a red ombre dial for the Datejust 31 in gold with diamond accents, signaling continued investment in the midsize segment.

Reading the Reference Number

"When you are looking at midsize references, pay close attention to the first few digits. On Datejust 31 models, the 278xxx series is the current generation with the Caliber 2236, while 178xxx models use the older 2235. Both are excellent movements, but the newer 2236 features a Syloxi silicon hairspring that improves accuracy and shock resistance. On the Oyster Perpetual side, the 277200 and 124200 replaced the 177200 and 114200 respectively in 2020. If you see a five-digit reference like 68273 or 78240, you are looking at a vintage or transitional piece. These older references are where the real value hides for smart buyers. Check our Rolex reference number page for a full breakdown of how the coding system works."

How Much Does a Midsize Rolex Cost?

Current secondary market pricing for the most popular midsize Rolex configurations, updated for 2026.

Midsize Rolex pricing spans a wide range depending on the model, material, era, and condition. The entry point for a midsize Rolex on the secondary market is around $3,500 for a vintage steel Date 34 or older Oyster Perpetual, while current-generation Datejust 31 models in precious metals with diamond bezels can exceed $25,000. Rolex raised retail prices by approximately 7% in January 2026, which has pushed more buyers toward the pre-owned market where pricing remains competitive. Below are the most commonly traded midsize configurations and their current price ranges.

Key Pricing Factors

"With midsize Rolex watches, the biggest pricing variables are material and completeness. A steel Datejust 31 with box and papers will sell for 15 to 20 percent more than the same reference without. Two-tone and gold models carry higher retail premiums, but they also depreciate more steeply in percentage terms, which means the secondary market is where smart buyers find the best value on precious metal midsize pieces. Also keep an eye on the discontinued Yacht-Master 35. Those Rolesium models (ref. 168622) are trading well below where I think they should be, given that Rolex no longer makes a 35mm sport watch. The supply is finite and getting smaller every year."

Retail vs. Secondary Market

Understanding the tradeoffs between buying a midsize Rolex from an authorized dealer and purchasing on the secondary market.

The decision between buying a midsize Rolex at retail through an authorized dealer and purchasing a pre-owned example on the secondary market comes down to priorities. The AD route guarantees a factory-new watch with the full Rolex warranty, but availability is inconsistent and you are limited to whatever is currently in production. The secondary market opens up decades of discontinued references, vintage configurations, and competitive pricing that often undercuts retail, particularly on precious metal and two-tone models.

For midsize watches specifically, the secondary market offers a major advantage: access to discontinued sizes and models that Rolex no longer produces. The Yacht-Master 35, the older Date 34, and many vintage Datejust 31 configurations are only available pre-owned. Additionally, several current-production midsize models like the Datejust 31 in popular dial and bezel combinations trade above retail on the secondary market, which means buying pre-owned at a fair price can actually save money compared to the markup at an AD. For buyers who value selection, speed, and value, a trusted pre-owned dealer is the smarter path.

Retail (Authorized Dealer) Secondary Market (Pre-Owned)
Price MSRP (2026 prices reflect ~7% increase) Market-driven, often below retail on precious metal models
Availability Waitlist required, popular dials and bezels may take months No waitlist, wide selection of current and discontinued references
Selection Limited to current production models Full range including vintage, discontinued, and rare configurations
Authentication Factory new, no concerns Requires trusted dealer with in-house authentication
Warranty 5-year Rolex warranty 2-year WatchGuys warranty
Vintage Access None Full access to decades of references, dials, and materials
Best For Buyers who want a factory-sealed current-production piece Buyers seeking specific discontinued models, vintage configurations, and the best overall value

Midsize Rolex: 31mm vs. 34mm vs. 37mm

The core decision every midsize Rolex buyer faces. Three distinct case sizes, three very different wearing experiences.

Choosing the right midsize Rolex starts with understanding how each case size wears, who it suits best, and what models are available at each diameter. The differences between 31mm, 34mm, and 37mm are more significant than the numbers suggest. A 31mm watch sits close to the wrist and reads as refined and understated, while a 37mm piece has enough visual weight to register as a small sport watch. The 34mm sits in the middle, offering a truly neutral proportions that suit almost any wrist from 5.5 to 7 inches comfortably.

At 31mm, your primary options are the Datejust 31 and the Oyster Perpetual 31. Both are current production models with modern movements, and the Datejust 31 in particular offers an enormous range of materials, dials, and bezels. Historically, the 31mm was marketed toward women, but the growing appreciation for vintage sizing has brought more men to this size. On a 6-inch wrist, a 31mm Datejust wears with the quiet confidence of a timepiece from an era when watches were worn for function, not attention.

At 34mm, the landscape shifts. This is the size of the Oyster Perpetual 34 (current production) and the discontinued Rolex Date 34, both of which are time-only or date-equipped watches in stainless steel. The 34mm case has long been considered the ideal unisex size: large enough to read easily, small enough to disappear under a shirt cuff. It is also where you will find some of the best value in the entire Rolex catalog, since 34mm models receive less hype than the 36mm and 41mm pieces that dominate social media.

At 37mm, the Yacht-Master is the only option, and it is a sport watch with a rotating bezel, available in Rolesium (steel/platinum), Everose Rolesor (steel/Everose gold), and full Everose gold. The 37mm Yacht-Master replaced the discontinued 35mm version in 2015 and occupies a unique niche as the smallest current-production Rolex sport watch. It wears like a compact version of the 40mm Yacht-Master, with genuine tool-watch functionality in a package that works beautifully on smaller wrists or for anyone who prefers their sport watches without the bulk.

Midsize Rolex Nicknames and Variants

The collector shorthand and notable variant names you will encounter when shopping for midsize Rolex watches.

Midsize Rolex watches have fewer dramatic nicknames than their larger sport-watch siblings, but several terms are commonly used in the collector and dealer community. Understanding these helps when searching listings and communicating with sellers. For a broader look at Rolex nicknames across the full lineup, visit our Rolex nicknames page.

Rolesium

Rolex's proprietary term for the combination of Oystersteel and 950 platinum. Found on the Yacht-Master 35 (ref. 168622) and Yacht-Master 37 (ref. 268622), featuring a platinum dial and bezel with a steel case and bracelet.

Refs: 168622, 268622

The Date

Not to be confused with the Datejust. The Rolex Date is a 34mm model functionally identical to the Datejust but produced almost exclusively in stainless steel. Often considered the quiet workhorse of the midsize lineup.

Refs: 1500, 1501, 15200, 15210, 115200, 115234

Midsize Datejust

The widely used collector term for any 31mm Datejust. Even though Rolex now officially calls it "Datejust 31," the community still refers to it as the "midsize Datejust" to distinguish it from the 36mm and 41mm versions.

All 31mm Datejust references

Celebration Dial

Refers to the colorful, multi-colored dial option Rolex offered on the Oyster Perpetual from 2020 to 2025, including the 31mm (ref. 277200) and 34mm (ref. 124200). These dials were discontinued in 2025 and replaced with pastel options.

Refs: 277200, 124200 (discontinued dial variant)

President Bracelet (Midsize)

The semi-circular three-link bracelet Rolex reserves for its solid gold models. Found on the full 18k gold Datejust 31 (ref. 68278 and successors). Not to be confused with the Day-Date "President," which is a full-size men's model.

Refs: 68278, 178278, 278278

How to Buy a Midsize Rolex

A five-step checklist for buying a midsize Rolex with confidence, whether you are shopping for your first watch or adding to a collection.

  • Decide on your size first. Try on watches in 31mm, 34mm, and 37mm if possible. The difference between these sizes is meaningful on the wrist, especially if you plan to wear the watch daily. A Rolex sizing guide can help, but nothing replaces trying on the actual watch.
  • Choose your model family. The Datejust 31 offers the most customization with dozens of dial, bezel, and material combinations. The Oyster Perpetual 31 and 34 keep things simple with time-only dials in steel. The Yacht-Master 37 is the only midsize option with a sport bezel. Each model family serves a different purpose, so match the watch to your lifestyle.
  • Verify the reference number. Confirm the reference number matches the case, bezel material, and movement. On midsize models, small details matter: a 278274 (current-gen fluted bezel) looks very different from a 78274 (older gen, same configuration). Our reference number guide breaks down the coding system in detail.
  • Inspect condition carefully. Check for bracelet stretch (a common issue on older midsize models), dial originality, crystal condition, and whether the watch has been polished. Aftermarket dials and bezels reduce value significantly. Ask for detailed photos and service history. Buying from a dealer with in-house watchmakers, like WatchGuys, ensures the watch has been properly inspected before sale.
  • Prioritize complete sets. A midsize Rolex with the original box, papers, warranty card, and hang tags commands a meaningful premium over a watch-only purchase. For current-generation models (278xxx, 277200, 124200), expect to pay 15 to 20 percent more for a full set. On vintage references, any original documentation adds even more value proportionally. If budget is tight, a pre-owned Rolex without papers from a trusted dealer is still a solid buy, just factor the documentation gap into your offer price.
