Rolex Submariner 116618LB First Impressions
What hits you the moment you pick up the 116618LB.
The Rolex Submariner 116618LB announces itself before you read the dial. Of all the Rolex watches we handle, few have the sheer density of a full yellow gold Submariner, and the Rolex Submariner 116618LB lands in your palm with a weight that feels closer to a paperweight than a sports watch. The blue is the second thing. Under showroom lighting the sunburst dial and the ceramic bezel read as two slightly different blues, the dial shifting from royal to near-navy as you tilt it, the bezel holding one deep, glossy tone. Against the warm gold, the combination looks richer in person than any product photo manages.
What surprised us on first handling is how much of a tool watch it still is. The crown guards are substantial, the bezel clicks with the same precision as a steel 116610LN, and the clasp snaps shut with an authority that reminds you this is a 300m diver that happens to be made of gold. Most buyers come to the 116618LB expecting jewelry. What they get is a Submariner that has been cast in a heavier, warmer metal, with every functional detail intact. That tension between opulence and purpose is the whole appeal of this reference.
THE WEARING EXPERIENCE
Rolex Submariner 116618LB On the Wrist
How the 116618LB actually wears, day in and day out.
Quick Specs
The Rolex Submariner 116618LB wears larger than its 40mm diameter suggests, and the reason is the Maxi case. Rolex widened the lugs and crown guards on this generation, so the flanks of the case run almost straight down from the bezel instead of tapering. On a 6.75-inch wrist the lugs sit flush and the watch looks proportionate. On a 6.25-inch wrist it still fits, but the broad lugs and the visual weight of the gold make it read closer to a 41mm or 42mm steel watch. Buyers moving up from a 40mm steel Submariner should expect the gold to feel like a size up, even though the case dimensions are identical.
Weight is the defining experience. At roughly 215 grams sized, the 116618LB is close to double a steel Submariner and you feel it in the first hour. Balance is good because the solid gold bracelet pulls weight around the wrist rather than leaving it on top of the case, so it does not flop or rotate. After a few days the weight stops registering as a burden and starts registering as presence. The 12.5mm thickness clears a dress shirt cuff without a fight. Against its successor, the 41mm Rolex Submariner 126618, the 116618LB feels chunkier at the lugs and slightly more compact overall, which is exactly the trade some buyers want.

Rolex Submariner 116618LB Specifications
Case, dial, bezel, and bracelet on the 116618LB, examined up close.
Case
The Rolex Submariner 116618LB case is 40mm of solid 18k yellow gold in the Maxi profile: wide, squared-off lugs, heavy crown guards, brushed top surfaces and high-polished flanks. The brushed-to-polished edge along the lugs is crisp on an unpolished example and is the first place a refinished case gives itself away. Gold is soft, so light hairlines on the polished sides are normal within months; rounded lug tips or softened crown guards are not. The Triplock crown screws down with a reassuring number of turns and winds smoothly, the caseback is solid and plain, water resistance is 300m, and the flat sapphire crystal has a cyclops over the date and no exterior anti-reflective coating, so expect reflections in bright sun.
Dial and Bezel
The Rolex Submariner 116618LB dial is a blue sunburst that sits a shade darker than the bezel in diffuse light and brightens by two or three tones in direct sun as the radial brushing flares. The Maxi hour markers are large 18k gold surrounds filled with lume, and the hands match. Early examples (roughly 2008 to 2009) carry green-glowing SuperLuminova; later examples switched to blue Chromalight, which charges slower but holds a readable glow deep into the night. The date disc at 3 o'clock is white with black numerals, never color-matched to the blue; it is legible but it is the least elegant element on the face.
The bezel is a unidirectional 120-click blue Cerachrom ceramic insert with gold-toned PVD numerals. The action is firm with almost no back-play, the clicks are sharp, and the ceramic has not faded or scratched on any example we have handled, unlike the aluminum insert on the 16618 it replaced. Chips at the insert edge are the one damage mode to check for, since they cannot be repaired, only replaced.
Bracelet
The Rolex Submariner 116618LB bracelet is a solid 18k yellow gold Oyster with brushed outer links and polished center links, tapering from 20mm at the lugs to about 16mm at the clasp. It is the heaviest component of the watch and the most important one to inspect pre-owned, because gold links wear at the pins faster than steel. Hold the case, let the bracelet hang, and any sag or visible gaps between links means stretch that costs real money to correct. The Oysterlock clasp has a safety flip-lock and the Glidelock extension, adjustable in roughly 2mm steps up to about 20mm without tools. The polished clasp cover scratches quickly on gold, and a deeply marked cover is a fair negotiating point.

What to Check on a Pre-Owned 116618LB
"I look at three things before anything else on a 116618LB. First, the bracelet. I count the links, I check for stretch, and I look at the clasp cover, because a tired gold bracelet is the single most expensive fix on this watch. Second, the lugs. If the edges are soft and the brushing runs into the polish, someone has had it on a wheel. Third, the bezel insert edge, with a loupe, for chips. If those three pass, the rest of the watch almost always does too. Our Rolex metal codes page is worth a look if you are cross-shopping the 116618 against the 116613 or 116619 and want to be sure what you are being quoted."

Rolex Submariner 116618LB Movement Review
How the Caliber 3135 performs where it matters: on the wrist, every day.
The Rolex Submariner 116618LB runs the Caliber 3135, the movement Rolex used across the Submariner Date, Datejust, and Sea-Dweller for more than 30 years: 28,800 vph, Parachrom hairspring, 48-hour reserve. That 48 hours is the one number that dates it. Take the watch off Friday evening and it is stopped by Sunday night, so weekend-only wearers will reset the date more often than with a 70-hour caliber. The examples we have timed run between zero and plus three seconds a day. Examples from 2015 onward were regulated to the Superlative Chronometer standard of minus two to plus two, and both early and late 116618LBs tend to beat their stated tolerance once settled in.
Winding through the Triplock crown is smooth and the rotor is silent on the wrist. The date jumps cleanly at midnight with a quickset in the second crown position. The 3135 is also the easiest high-volume Rolex movement to service: any competent independent knows it, parts are plentiful, and the interval is about ten years. Expect a Rolex Service Center overhaul on a gold Submariner to run roughly $1,000 to $1,400 in 2026 including refinishing, or about half that from a good independent who will skip the polish if you ask, which on a gold watch you should.

Service Costs and the Polishing Trap on the Caliber 3135
"The 3135 in the 116618LB is as close to bulletproof as a mechanical movement gets. We see twelve-year-old examples that have never been serviced and still run inside chronometer spec. The real service risk on this watch is not the movement, it is the polish. A full factory service includes refinishing, and every pass on a wheel takes gold off the lugs. If you send yours in, ask for no polish in writing. The movement will be fine either way. The case will not."

Rolex Submariner 116618LB Market Price
Prices reflect complete sets (box, papers, warranty card). Watches without complete sets typically trade 5-15% lower.
The Rolex Submariner 116618LB trades between roughly $32,000 and $38,000 in 2026 for a standard blue dial with box and papers, which puts a clean example right around its final retail of $36,950. That is unusual for a discontinued precious metal Rolex; most fall well below last retail within a few years. The floor is gold itself. With roughly 150 grams of 18k in the case and bracelet, melt value is a meaningful fraction of the asking price, and as gold has climbed the 116618LB has refused to soften the way the steel ceramic Submariners did. Late-production Chromalight full sets sit at the top of the range, and the factory diamond serti dial (116618LB-0002) trades higher still. Our current listings are on the Rolex Submariner 116618LB price page.
The number that matters is the gap to the current 126618LB, which retails for about $50,900 after Rolex's January 2026 increase and trades pre-owned between $39,000 and $45,000. Buying the 116618LB saves $7,000 to $13,000 against a used 126618LB and $15,000 to $19,000 against retail, enough to cover a full service and a bracelet link or two with money left over. For a buyer not committed to the 41mm case or the 70-hour reserve, it is the clear value in the gold Rolex lineup.

Rolex Submariner 116618LB Comparison
The 116618LB against the alternatives buyers actually cross-shop.
Rolex 116618LB vs. Rolex Submariner 126618LB (Current 41mm)
The Rolex Submariner 116618LB and the 126618LB that replaced it in 2020 are the same idea in two generations, and the choice comes down to proportions, movement, and money. The 126618LB grew to 41mm but slimmed its lugs and widened the bracelet to 21mm, so it looks sleeker where the 116618LB looks heavier-set. Its Caliber 3235 adds a 70-hour reserve, a real upgrade for anyone who rotates watches. The 116618LB counters with the proven 3135, the more compact 40mm footprint, and a price $7,000 to $19,000 lower. Wrists under 6.5 inches, or anyone who prefers the more muscular case, should take the 116618LB. Buyers who want the latest spec and the longest reserve should pay up for the 126618LB.
"I have sold both, and the 116618LB is the one I would wear. The 40mm Maxi case has more attitude than the 41mm, and on a gold watch attitude is the point. The 3235 is a better movement on paper. The 3135 has never let one of my clients down in thirty years. Keep the ten grand."

Rolex 116618LB vs. Rolex Submariner 116613LB (Bluesy)
The Rolex Submariner 116618LB and the two-tone Rolex Submariner 116613LB Bluesy share a case shape, movement, bezel, and dial, and from across a room they are hard to tell apart. On the wrist they are different watches. The Bluesy's steel case with gold bezel, crown, and center links cuts the weight to around 155 grams and the price to roughly $13,000 to $17,000, less than half the 116618LB. The full gold watch gives you warmth on every surface, the heavier presence, and a value floor steel cannot provide. The Bluesy is the sensible choice. The 116618LB is the one you buy because sensible was never the goal.

Is the Rolex Submariner 116618LB Worth It?
Is the 116618LB worth your money?
The Rolex Submariner 116618LB is worth buying, and in 2026 it is the best value in a full gold Submariner you can get. It is the right watch for the buyer who wants a solid gold sports Rolex with real dive credentials, who prefers the 40mm Maxi case to the current 41mm, and who would rather hold a discontinued reference with a gold floor under it than pay a current-production premium for a 70-hour reserve. It is the wrong watch for anyone who finds 200-plus grams tiring, for anyone who needs a weekend-proof power reserve, and for anyone who will be bothered by the hairlines that gold picks up within the first month of real wear.
The single strongest reason to buy it is the price relative to what you get. Clean examples sit at or just under their final retail, the 126618LB costs $7,000 to $19,000 more for the same gold and the same blue, and the 116618LB has already proven it does not fall far when the market cools. Buy a late-production example with a tight bracelet and crisp lugs, insist on no polish when it goes in for service, and it will look the same in ten years as it does today. If you are selling one, we buy Rolex watches like this every week and pay accordingly.
"Gold Submariners are undervalued and the 116618LB is the proof. You are buying a 300m Rolex diver in solid gold for roughly what it cost new, with a discontinued 40mm case you cannot get anymore. Check the bracelet, buy the full set, and stop overthinking it."
